Hawker Siddeley Trident 1E accident report

Monday 13 September 1971 PLAAF Trident 1E reg.256 c/n 2131

Flight from Qinhuangdao Shanhaiguan Airport (SHP) to with 9 people on board. YOM : 1966. While parked at Qinhuangdao Shanhaiguan Airport , (loc. 39°58’10’N 119°43’47”E ), east of Pekin, the Trident was 'stolen' by nine officers of the Chinese Air Force who apparently wanted to desert. While cruising over Mongolia, the airplane crashed in unclear circumstances near the city of Ondorkhaan. It is unclear if the accident was the consequence of a loss of control due to fuel exhaustion or if the aircraft was shot down by the pilot of a fighter aircraft. All 9 people on board died in the crash including Chinese Vice Premier and Minister of Defense Lin Biao . location : Ondorkhaan, Mongolia (renamed to Chinggis City in November 2013) +- 1 km 47°20’24”N 110°37’12”E
