Boeing 727-100C accident report

Selection of the most serious accidents :

February 16, 1968 the 727-092C B-1018 of Civil Air Transport (CAT) crashes near Linkuo, Taiwan. 21 occupants and 1 person on the ground are killed. Plane had taken off in Hong Kong (HKG) with 52 passengers and 11 crew members bound for Taipei, Sung Shan aiport (TSA). Performed an ILS approach from RW10 but came too low and hit the ground, 11km NW of Taipei at Linkou. c/n 19175 1st fl 1966 3xJT8D-9 engines. Location : +-100m 25°04'48.50"N 121°26'38.78"O

On January 5, 1969, the 727-113C YA-FAR of Ariana Afghan Airlines crashed at Gatwick airport. A total of 50 people are killed and 15 injured.

Horley, Surrey, 2 dead on the ground. Flight 701 from Kabul via Frankfurt to Gatwick with 54 passengers and 8 crew members. ILS-Approach RW27, wrong flap setting 15° instead of 25° led to a too high (descending) speed as a result of which the aircraft came under the glide path and hit the ground 2.5km east of Gatwick Airport. United 727-22C N7412U c/n 19100/324 pictured at Los Angeles (LAX) July 1978, similar to unfortunate N7434U

On January 18, 1969, the 727-022C N7434U of United Airlines crashes near Los Angeles (LAX). All 38 occupants are killed. c/n 19891 1st flight : 1968 (plane was only 5 months old) 1036 flight hours 3x JT8D-7 engines. Operated flight 266 between Los Angeles (LAX) and Denver (DEN) with 32 passengers and 6 crew members. The aircraft had been flying since January 15, 1969 with the power generator of engine 3 not working. This was allowed, as there are still 2 generators left. Aircraft takes off in the dark from RW24. A fire alarm goes off 15 minutes after TO. There is a fire in engine no.1, which is being switched off. Shortly afterwards, the power is lost from the generator of engine 2. There is still an emergency power supply but it is either not switched on or does not work. With the flight instruments out of order, the crew becomes disoriented and shortly afterwards the plane crashes into the sea, 20km west of Los Angeles airport. After this disaster, some changes were made to the electrical system and to the flight manual by order of the FAA. Location : +-1km 33°56'56"N 118°39'30"W couldn't find a picture of the N7434U

Sunday 15 September 1974 Air Vietnam 727-121C XV-NJC c/n 19819/516

DSP Flight VN706 from Da Nang apt (DAD) to Saigon – Than Son Nhat apt (SGN) with 8 crew and 67 passengers. YOM : 1968. The aircraft was hijacked and the crew was demanded to fly to Hanoi. For some reason it was attempted to fly to Phan Rang. On approach control was lost (due exploding hand grenade on board ?) and the aircraft crashed. engines : P&W JT8D-7. All 75 people on board died in the crash.

Saturday 12 April 1980 Transbrasil 727-27C PT-TYS c/n 19111/297

DSP Flight TR303 from Sao Paulo (CGH) to Florianopolis (FLN) with 8 crew and 50 passengers. YOM : 1966. During the approach in a heavy thunderstorm, the aircraft descended to low and impacted hill Morro da Virginia.

engines : P&W JT8D-7. 55 people died in the crash and 3 injured.

location : 22km NNE of Florianopolis (FLN) +-500m 27°29’49”S 48°26’46”W

In above table all known fatal accidents are listed, but not all incidents with no fatalities, only those with total flying hours known are listed , with the purpose to deduct the amount of years flown yearly and the average flight time.
